Police see a recent trend in thefts from motor vehicles

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Police have seen a trend this week of thefts from motor vehicles.

Inspector Brent Secondiak says the incidents are happening in the light industrial area near Gershaw Drive.

The thefts are believed to be related to people staying at local motels in the area and are known to police.

“We believe we know who they are and they know us well so we’re going to target them for the next period of time.”

Secondiak says typically they are thefts from vehicles that are left unlocked.

Adding that there’s been no vehicle damage reported and items like loose change have been stolen.

“We don’t know exactly but we believe it’s related to some of the hotels and motels in the area. We know there are different people staying in those establishments and we’ve had a history with them stealing from vehicles before so we’re really targeting some known offenders.”

Secondiak adds there has also been a lot of break and enters to detached garages and sheds in the Flats area, so there will be increased patrols there as well.

On Thursday night there were also thefts from yards on the southwest and southeast hill.

“We have some good video of a suspect or two suspects so we’re actively looking for them as we speak,” Secondiak said.

The suspects often steal tools and gardening equipment, likely for resale online or at local pawn shops.

Police add locations near Cuyler Road SE and Carons Cres SE have also been targeted for vehicle entries to unlocked vehicles.

Theft of motor vehicles have also occurred within the city. Police remind the public to ensure vehicles are locked and spare keys are not left inside.
