Hatters finding and enjoying outdoor fun in the heat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – At 34 C, Medicine Hat was one of the hottest places in the country Wednesday and Thursday.

But that didn’t stop Hatters from getting out and enjoying what the city has to offer in the great outdoors.

Having spray parks around Medicine Hat open has been a welcome relief for parents and kids this week with the region under a heat warning for the past two days

“It’s awesome that the spray parks are open because the kids need to run around and burn off energy and cool down because it’s so hot lately,” said one local mother. “They were so excited when the parks opened again. They love it.”

The water in the spray park is great for the young crowd. But those a little bit older prefer the water in the South Saskatchewan River.

A pair of young women had just finished a kayak trip from Redcilff to Strathcona Island Park that took more than two hours and are looking at going camping next week.

Camping is on the minds of a lot of people since it’s summer fun that works well in this time of physical distancing, being able to stay away from people but sill enjoy the outdoors.

For others, like the friends enjoying a picnic in the fresh air next to the river, it’s the simplest of things that are giving them the most joy during these hot, hot days.

The youngest children CHAT News talked to were quick to answer what their favourite things about summer is — it’s hot, to swim, doing fun things and not going to school.

The weekend forecast is showing a bit of relief for Medicine Hat, but highs above 30 C are predicted for all of next week.
