MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta recently received its biggest one-time donation in recent memory.

“It’s pretty amazing for our whole community of southeast Alberta that we received this $2.75 million bequest from John and Mata Rinke,” says Niki Gray, community engagement coordinator for the Community Foundation.

After John’s passing in August 2003, Mata continued their passion as philanthropists and became a Heritage Club member with the CFSEA in 2007, says the foundation. Mata established the John and Mata Rinke Fund dedicated to the CFSEA’s Smart and Caring Fund, which supports the greatest needs of the community.

HALO Air Ambulance, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society and the Champion Centre are among the recent recipients of Smart and Caring community grants.

“Every so often, our Foundation is the recipient of an extremely generous bequest that is a true game changer for charities in southeastern Alberta,” says board chair Michael Anctil. “We are grateful for John and Mata’s vision of philanthropy in helping support our communities, today, tomorrow, forever.”

Mata Rinke passed away in April 2019.
