More match potential

Alberta expands organ and tissue donation registry

The pool of potential organ and tissue donors is growing.

Residents of the Northwest Territories can now join the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Registry.

A new agreement between the provincial governments will make NWT residents eligible for donation if they pass away in an Alberta hospital and their organs and tissues are viable.

Northwest Territories residents who die there can’t donate due to low population density and medical availability. Those who require critical care are often taken to hospital in Alberta but until the new agreement were not eligible for the Alberta registry.

“This agreement will help shorten the organ and tissue waiting lists and improve the chances of a match for those in need,” said Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

Diane Thom, NWT minister of health and social services, said this has been a long-standing commitment of the government and encourages residents to register.

The NWT will cover any costs for changes and maintenance of the registry specific to its inclusion.
