Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region’s jobless rate up at 9.8 per cent in June

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta’s unemployment rate went unchanged from May to June.

The latest jobless numbers have been released, as businesses have adjusted to operational changes and reopenings across the country, province and the local region.

Alberta’s unemployment rate was 15.5 per cent in June, the same rate as in May.

The rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region was 9.8 per cent in June, an increase from 9.0 per cent for the month of May. The region still held the lowest unemployment rate across Alberta.

Below is the rates for each economic region in the province, with May’s statistic listed in parenthesis:

· Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 16.5 per cent (14.1 per cent in May)

· Edmonton: 15.8 per cent (13.8)

· Calgary: 15.0 per cent (13.2)

· Red Deer: 13.4 per cent (12.7)

· Camrose-Drumheller: 12.8 per cent (10.4)

· Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 11.6 per cent (9.9)

· Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 9.8 per cent (9.0)

For males and females, aged 15-plus, the rate was 15.5 per cent combined.

For youths (ages 15-24, male and female), the combined rate was 30.7 per cent. For adults (ages 25-plus, male and female), the combined rate was 13.2 per cent.

CANADIAN ECONOMY

Canada-wide, the jobless rate in June was 12.3 per cent. Although high, that’s actually an improvement from May, which saw an unemployment rate hit a record-high of 13.7 per cent.

Statistics Canada says 953,000 jobs were added last month. Those include 488,000 full-time and 465,000 part-time positions.
