Medicine Hat's still closed for now

Service Canada offices begin to reopen

Jul 9, 2020 | 1:47 PM

Some Service Canada offices across the country are being reopened, but Medicine Hat’s does not appear to be among those opening in the first wave.

No update has been posted on the Service Canada website since March 30 for Medicine Hat and a sign on the door Thursday says the office is closed until further notice.

The only Alberta office that has been updated is the Calgary Centre office, which shows open hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Decisions about reopening are being guided by public health advice, and with the priority that as many Canadians as possible should be able to access an open Service Canada office.

The federal government says the reopening of in-person Service Canada Centres will build on the new services recently put in place to meet the needs of Canadians during the pandemic, such as the eServiceCanada portal. This portal allows Canadians requiring assistance from Service Canada to submit an online request and receive a callback from a Service Canada officer within two business days.

With the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, Canadians should continue to use online services whenever possible, including the eServiceCanada portal. Canadians who need in-person services should check the Find a Service Canada Office webpage to see if their local office is open and for updates. When your local office does open, officials encourage people to make a request for an appointment through eServiceCanada.

Safety measures such as physical distancing will be in place and people will be strongly encouraged to use face masks and hand sanitizer. Each Service Canada Centre will operate according to province and municipal health and safety guidelines. As a result, face masks will be offered at Service Canada Centres where they are required under these guidelines.
