City sets sights on July 17 to open Echo Dale

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hatters will be able to cool off in Echo Dale swim lake next week.

The city says the reopening is tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 17.

“Echo Dale will feel different than in previous years, but it can still be enjoyed by family and friends together,” said Scott Richter, manager of parks. “Necessary measures will be in place. Beach-goers and swimmers alike are reminded that physical distancing rules are in effect, on the grass, along the sand and in the water.”

Crews are currently filling the lake and monitoring water quality levels regularly.

“The water we use in the swim lake comes from the South Saskatchewan River. It’s then filtered and chemically treated with chlorine,” said Richter. “Staff monitor the water quality on a daily basis and send samples for testing throughout the season to ensure continued safe public use.”

The city says the change rooms, washrooms and concession will remain closed for the season due to the complexities of practically accommodating all occupancy, distancing, and sanitization guidelines outlined by the province. Portable toilets will be available on-site and maintained on a cleaning schedule by parks staff.

The says it’s up to residents to comply with parameters put in place and continue to follow provincial guidelines.

“We want everyone to enjoy our outdoor amenities this summer,” Richter said. “It’s important that we all follow these guidelines and stay home if not feeling well.”

City recreational facilities are continuing to be reviewed by parks and recreation staff. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
