More history for historic club

Public invited to Cypress Club to see new James Marshall mural

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Nothing spruces up a Medicine Hat scene like a brick art mural by James Marshall.

And even though the Cypress Club isn’t exactly in need of sprucing up, a generous act from a couple of members has done just that.

Cypress Club manager Lorraine Schmaltz calls the piece beautiful and stunning.

A brick mural was put up for auction by Marshall at the 2019 Medalta Black and White Gala. Club members Judge Dietrich Brand and Clint Yarshenko were the successful bidders and wanted the mural to match with the club’s history.

The result was a depiction of the greater sage grouse, something Schmaltz is a different type of mural for Marshall.

She couldn’t be happier with the result.

“It brings so much history to this club,” says Schmaltz. “This is a historical building to begin with but then you see someone’s art like this, it’s beautiful, it’s stunning, it suits the club. It’s a great, great partnership.”

The piece was installed on the Cypress Club patio in May.

But just because it’s in the Cypress Club doesn’t mean it’s out of sight for Hatters. The club is opening its doors to the general public for the month of July.

“You can enjoy yourself out here on this beautiful patio which is hidden in downtown Medicine Hat,” says Schmaltz. “We invite you all to come down and join us at this lovely little gem.”

Lunch is served at the club from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Many more James Marshall brick murals can be found in Medicine Hat including at city hall, the Veiner Centre and St. Joseph’s Home, as well as in Redcliff.
