Staggered reopening

Family Leisure Centre begins reopening on Monday

Jul 3, 2020 | 12:12 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Portions of the Family Leisure Centre will be open Monday as the staggered reopening of the facility begins.

The Cenovus Arena and the South Country Co-op Fitness Floor will be open to the public for the first time in more than three months.

The fitness centre will be open and group fitness classes will begin. Pre-registration is required for the classes.

James Will, general manager of parks & recreation, said the FLC team is excited to welcome the community back, and notes there will be changes from the last time people visited.

“The main lobby will look different because of the protocols we will have in place, including reminders about physical distancing, but our staff are here to help guide you and answer any questions you or your family may have,” he said.

Other parts of the building will reopen throughout July:

  • Kinsmen Aquatic Park – July 13 — Public Swim and Lane Swim (pre-registration required for both)
  • Gymnasium – week of July 20
  • Fieldhouse – week of July 27

Following guidelines from the Government of Alberta, there will be restrictions on the number of participants allowed in the public swim and lane sessions, as well as the group fitness classes. Pre-registration for the classes and sessions will open 48 hours in advance at medicinehat.ca/flc. The FLC can not accommodate walk up participants and ask that people don’t drop off family members unless they are registered in the scheduled time slot.

Email recreation@medicinehat.ca for more information.

Information about swimming lessons will be available on the City website and shared prior to registration opening.

A Stay Safe Pass that allows access to all open recreational facilities, from July 6 to August 30, is being offered at the FLC for a one-time fee.

Public health and safety remains a concern as the FLC and other City of Medicine Hat facilities open.

“We do still ask that anyone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to please stay home,” Will added. “If everyone continues to make responsible choices, we can all enjoy these facilities. We continue to monitor our cleaning and sterilizing practices to ensure we mitigate virus transmission in our community.”

The FLC parking lot improvement project is ongoing and is scheduled to be completed by August. Parking is available on the east side of the facility.

For more information regarding pre-registering and the Stay Safe Pass, visit parks and recreation on the city’s website or call 403-502-8566.
