One day after spiking to 71 new cases of COVID-19, Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced 41 new cases on Tuesday out of 7,198 tests completed.

There are now 7,405 recovered cases, an increase of 51, and the number of active cases dropped by 12 to 547, according to the numbers on alberta.ca.

One new case has been confirmed in Medicine Hat. There are now six active cases and 36 recovered cases in Medicine Hat.

The city of Brooks is now down to just one active case. Of the total 1,119 cases confirmed there, 1,109 have recovered and there have been nine deaths.

In the South Zone there are four new cases, bringing the total to 1,309. There are 28 active cases, 1,271 recovered and 10 deaths in the zone. There are no current hospitalizations in the zone.

The province has confirmed 8,108 cases over the course of the pandemic. There are 41 Albertans currently in hospital with COVID-19, nine of which are in ICU. The death toll sits at 154.

The government increased the outdoor gathering limit to 200 people on Tuesday, one day before Canada Day.

“We are making this shift based on several factors, including an analysis of how the virus is spreading in Alberta and the reduced risk of gatherings held outdoors,” Hinshaw said, adding if organizers and attendees follow appropriate health measures events can be conducted safely.

“However more people does not mean less care. All public health measures are still in effect.”

That includes physical distancing, wearing a mask, washing hands and staying home if not feeling well.

Hinshaw said anyone hosting a gathering must keep physical distancing in mind when inviting people to their space.

“You also want to think about cleaning and sanitizing doorknobs, faucets and bathroom facilities partway through the gathering,” the province’s chief medical officer of health advised.

Hinshaw said one area in both Calgary and Edmonton are on the watch list, with more than 50 active cases per 100,000. She announced four outbreaks are being listed at four restaurants in Edmonton.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw will provide her next in-person update on Thursday and there will be no update online until Thursday.

On May 11, the province began putting a more detailed chart online for each zone.

Cypress County is showing zero active cases and 21 recovered, while the County of Newell is showing zero active cases and 20 recovered.

The County of Forty Mile has two confirmed cases both listed as recovered.
