Privacy Commissioners to probe Tim Hortons mobile app
Four Privacy Commissioners are going to investigate the Tim Hortons app following reports that raised concerns about how the app collects and uses data about people who have downloaded it.
The federal Privacy Commissioner and the provincial ones in Alberta, B.C. and Quebec will undertake the investigation.
At issue is whether the mobile app complies with Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
The investigation will also probe whether the organization is obtaining meaningful consent from app users to collect and use their geolocation data for purposes which could include the amassing and use of detailed user profiles, and whether that collection and use of the data is appropriate in the circumstances.
