MEDICINE HAT, AB – Don’t be alarmed if things downtown seem to be a little slower than normal – the speed limit in the core dropped by 10 km/h effective today.

The City of Medicine Hat announced earlier this month the change would take place.

The speed limit in the nine-block area from South Railway Street to Fourth Avenue and from First Street to Fourth Street is now 40 km/h.

At the time the City of Medicine Hat said making downtown more pedestrian-friendly was a key finding from public and business engagement.

An investigation of speed limits city-wide is part of the city’s ongoing Municipal Development Plan review. The speed limit review looked at maintaining vehicle, cycling and pedestrian safety; road design characteristics and adjoining land use; number, location and type of intersections; and posting a speed that most drivers consider safe and reasonable under ideal conditions.

Speed limits on Parkview, Drive, South Boundary Road, Box Springs Road and Broadway Avenue in recent years as part of the overall review.
