Brooks aquatic centre to reopen July 6

BROOKS, AB- The aquatics centre is set to reopen in the city of Brooks starting July 6, allowing the city to dive back into swimming lessons, lane swim, water fitness and open swim.

Restrictions will be in place to ensure proper physical distancing, according to the city.

Lane swim, according to their website will be scheduled in 45 minute time-slots and users will only be allowed to swim in every other lane.

“You can sign up through RecWeb and I understand that it is available online for you to get and the slots will be posted June 25, ” Mayor Barry Morishita said during his live Q & A session Friday.

For swimmers enrolled in swimming lessons, students in lower levels, are asked to be accompanied by a family member or care giver from the same household to maintain physical distancing requirements. Older students and those in a higher levels are not required to have a caregiver but physical distancing requirements are in place.

There is still no tentative date as to when lifeguarding courses will resume.

“Those are under the direction of the Red Cross and the Life Saving Society, and we are still waiting on direction as to how to develop those,” he said.

Open swim at the pool will be limited to maximum of 70 participants, and will be scheduled at a separate time from other programming.

Water fitness classes will be drop-in only and will use the entire pool space to ensure physical distancing.

Registration for programs, according to the city will be available June 25 .

The Hot Tub and Steam Room will not be available for use come July 6.

“Those are areas that are still in the Phase 3 of Alberta’s relaunch plan and for various reasons, infection control in enclosed areas like that is pretty unknown, and they are still working on some issues there. We don’t have a tentative date for Phase 3, so you will just have to watch just like we will” Morishita said.

On Friday June 19, the City of Medicine Hat announced Hill Pool, Strathcona Pool and the Family Leisure Centre (FLC) Cenovus Arena and South Country Co-Op Fitness Centre will open on July 6.

The city says other Family Leisure Centre amenities are expected to reopen in a staggered approach through the last three weeks of July, including Kinsmen Aquatic Park, the gymnasium and the field house.

Details on the reopening, including registering for swimming lessons, will be available on the city’s website prior to the scheduled reopening.
