Farmers’ Market open for business

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After a delayed opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Farmers’ Market will be open for business on Saturday.

While the staggered delay may have seen the Farmers’ Market open several weeks later than usual, it’s just on time for the first harvest of early crops such as carrots and radishes which will be on sale along with meats and fresh bakery products, said coordinator Doreen Gunderson.

“We’re so excited that we finally get to open. Winter’s done and here we are and we’re opening up to a brand new normal,” said Gunderson.

But while the produce will be the same, how the market operates will be substantially different.

The Cypress Centre Pavilion gate will be used as the main entrance with a one-way loop in place which will circle patrons around the building as well as the Fieldhouse.

Hand-sanitizing stations will be located throughout the Cypress Centre and two-metre separation between vendors and buyers will be maintained by tables.

Patrons are also being asked not to bring outside food or drinks and bathroom facilities won’t be available.

“It’s basically for you, our vendors and our staff at the stampede to keep you healthy and we want you to feel safe when you walk into the building,” said Gunderson.

Gunderson says, unlike usual, the market is set up to expedite foot traffic through the building and individuals should have a plan on what they – or other family, friends and neighbours – need to ensure the safety of everyone.

The Farmers’ Market runs from 9 a.m. Saturday to 1 p.m.
