New COVID-19 modelling data to be released today, says Trudeau

Jun 4, 2020 | 9:32 AM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government will be releasing new COVID-19 data modelling later today, but says the signs are encouraging.

“The data shows that we are continuing to make progress in the fight against this virus. In many communities the number of new cases is low, and we can trace where they came from. That’s an encouraging sign that virus is slowing and in some cases even stopping”

But, said Trudeau, the pandemic is still threatening the health and safety of Canadians and that some measures such as testing and contact tracing must be strengthened.

Trudeau also reminded Canadians about the public health recommendations — proper hand hygiene, staying home when ill and keeping two metres away from others when out — are the best way to prevent the spread.

The prime minister also said help for seniors will begin arriving early next month.

Seniors will get previously announced top-ups to Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement payments the week of July 6. He said the top-ups, and one to GST payments, mean a possible extra $900 for single seniors and up to $1,500 for couples.

Trudeau began his daily address form outside Rideau Cottage speaking about GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.

He will join leaders from 50 countries and major organizations at the international pledging conference, which hopes to raise nearly $10 billion for GAVI the leading agency for distributing vaccines to less-developed countries.

He has already announced Canada’s five-year, $600-million pledge to GAVI, which has immunized 760 million children and prevented 13 million deaths in the world’s poorest countries since 2000.

“GAVI saves lives and Canada is doing its part,” Trudeau said.

As of Thursday morning, Canada had 93,430 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases and 7,543 deaths. There have been 1,787,446 Canadians tested.

In Alberta, there are 7,076 cases and 145 deaths. A total of 244,780 Albertans have been tested. There are 400 active cases in Alberta.
