Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run introduces Virtual Summer Series for Special Olympics Alberta

Jun 3, 2020 | 10:06 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Special Olympics Alberta and officers from across the province are encouraging people to bike, run and walk this summer in the Virtual Summer Series.

Registration is now open for three-part Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) event, running from June 15 to September 15. The suggested time frame for each activity is bike in the first month, run in the second and walk in the third.

The event is open to the public and participants can join and register at any time for one, two or three legs of the event. The cost for each leg is $15 and people can set individual distance goals for each leg. Anyone who finishes all three will receive a 2020 Virtual Summer Series medal.

The event is in response to a drop in donations and funding for Special Olympics Alberta due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The LETR has been forced to cancel or postpone all summer fundraising events. As well as the entry fee, people are encouraged to raise pledges for participation in any legs of the event.

Special Olympics Alberta has set an overall fundraising goal of $50,000. The funds raised will aid the group’s more than 3,300 athletes in their training and workouts and support virtual social opportunities and mental health.

More information and registration is available here.

Medicine Hat will host the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in 2022.
