Chamber cancels fall trade show

MEDICINE HAT, AB – One of the city’s most popular fall events has fallen victim to COVID-19.

The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has decided to cancel the 2020 Great West Home & Leisure Show due to the general uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and how Alberta’s relaunch will progress. The show was scheduled for Oct. 23-25.

“This decision was not made lightly as we know it’s a major event for our community, but in consideration of the present circumstances, the uncertainty of the regulations pertaining to mass gathering restrictions this fall and the significant decline in exhibitor interest for our fall show, we felt by making a decision early on we could provide some greater certainty to exhibitors and our contractors and our own operations,” said Chamber of Commerce president Tracy Noullett in a release. “Our trade show team spent the last month reaching out to past exhibitors to survey the interest in participating in our show and whether or not we could proceed with the show; however we found that a majority of our exhibitors would be unable to participate or commit with a number of factors impacting those decisions.

The trade show is a large source of revenue for the chamber, the loss of which the chamber will look to mitigate by reducing costs where possible but still providing value to the community.

Noulett adds “there will be exciting things to come within the organization as we adjust our own business model.”

The chamber has also decided to go ahead with its 2020 Business Awards, set for Oct. 16, but in a different way.

“We will be looking at a blended model where we deliver a gala experience virtually, while promoting local businesses and incorporating enhanced recognition for our winners, nominees and sponsors,” explains executive director Lisa Kowalchuk. “We want to create an unforgettable event that will create even greater recognition for our business community long after the event concludes.”

The organization will also look at delivering many of its other programs virtually for the time being.
