Demand for plexiglass shields on the rise as businesses plan to reopen

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With almost every store using it due to a variety of COVID-19 precautions, the demand for plexiglass has been high.

Businesses are protecting their customers and staff with customized borders and sneeze guards.

Owner of Speedy Glass in Medicine Hat Kyle Beauchesne says now that businesses are slated to reopen next week, it seems like everyone needs the plexiglass dividers.

He says several restaurants, clinics, and offices are asking for them.

But there seems to be no supply left.

“Even my suppliers they’re saying that they can’t order for a matter of 3 weeks to 2 months just because the demand is so high that the people they’re buying from are only selling to the bigger companies.”

Beauchesne’s suppliers are based out of Calgary and all of them are selling out quickly and you can only get certain sizes.

“A lot of shipping companies aren’t allowed to go from one warehouse to another or they’re making other precautions where they’re only shipping to the big companies.”

Depending on the width, the cost of a 4×8 plexiglass sheet can range from $220-$500 dollars per sheet.

He expects a lot of businesses will throw the plexiglass away when it no longer needs to be used.

“Because it’s a plastic product it scratches over time and after a year or two it becomes hard to see through. At that point, there’s not much polishing you can do.”

And he’s not sure how it could be reused.

Beauchesne says their Speedy Glass office is even in the process of making a divider for their front desk.

As for installing commercial glass, he says you need a specific glacier installer for insurance purposes.
