MEDICINE HAT, AB – An anonymous $15-thousand donation helped double the fundraising goal for the Stay @ Home Gala over the weekend.

Just over $50-thousand was raised during the virtual regional event.

Funds support the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) COVID-19 response fund.

The regional event was also part of a cross-country series of the gala.

It was held over Zoom on Saturday, May 2.

CFSEA Community Engagement Coordinator Niki Gray says the funds will start rolling out at the beginning of June.

“$50,118 was our total so all of southeast Alberta really came together and we’re excited to be able to put this on for our communities in support of charities in need.”

Until the end of this month, the provincial government will match donations raised by organizations up to $2 million.

The gala featured a silent auction, guest speakers, and entertainment to help benefit all community foundations across Canada.

Local entertainment included headliner Mackenzie Porter.

The CFSEA was one of 22 local organizations to put on a local segment.

Gray says about 160 people logged on in the region but it’s hard to say how many were watching as some family members were watching together.

Funds will support charities and vulnerable sectors across the region.

Meantime, the CFSEA chose organizations for the spring re-purposing funds for immediate COVID-19 support to go out right now.

Gray says they had about 20 applications across southeast Alberta. They’re slated to be announced late next week.
