Police catch trio of excessive speedsters over weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A few drivers were pushing a little too hard on the pedal over the weekend.

Medicine Hat Police Service issued three tickets from May 1-3 to drivers who were speeding at more than double or near-double the posted speed limit.

Drivers were caught going 97 and 96 km/h in 50 km/h zones and another was caught driving at 65 km/h in a 30 km/h zone.

Speed is one of the main contributors to serious injury and fatality collisions, with nearly one-quarter of collisions in Alberta involving motorists who are driving too fast, states an MHPS release.

Motorists are reminded that all roads within the City of Medicine Hat have a 50 km/h speed limit, unless otherwise posted, and 30 km/h playground zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Also, motorists must slow to 60 km/h or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower, when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks that are stopped on the side of the highway.

Roadside issued fines for speeding range from $78 to $474 and include demerits ranging from two to six points. Offences for speeding 50 km/h over the posted limit will result in the offender being compelled to court to face substantial fines and a driver’s licence suspension. Fines for speeding past emergency vehicles or in construction zones are doubled.
