Brooks has another triple-digit increase in cases of COVID-19, but has also seen its number of recovered cases nearly double.

The city now has 872 cases, an increase of 109 since Wednesday. The number of recovered cases has gone from 31 to 55. There are 813 active cases and deaths remain at four.

There have been 333 confirmed cases among workers and contractors at JBS in Brooks. At the Cargill meat plant in High River there are 908 confirmed cases, 631 of which are recovered. No number of recoveries was given for JBS.

Medicine Hat still has 29 cases, but two of those have moved from active to recovered. There are 14 active and 15 recovered cases.

The South Zone has 946 cases, an increase of 113 in the past 24 hours. Across the province the cases rose by 190 to 5,355.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw also announced the number of recovered cases is now at 2,161, an increase of 208.

She also announced three new deaths and that one previously reported death thought to be related to COVID-19 has been reclassified as not related to the virus. The total of deaths is now at 89.

Hinshaw said there are 544 cases confirmed at continuing care facilities in the province.

She said what has been accomplished in terms of slowing the spread can be celebrated, but letting up on outbreak control is not an option.

“Many have suffered from this virus. Lives, lifestyles and livelihoods have all been impacted. I want to thank all Albertans for their collective sacrifices that have helped us get to where we are at today,” she said.

But the fight is far from over.

“We must continue to use common sense to protect each other and help prevent the spread.”

Hinshaw ended by again asking people to wash their hands frequently, stay home when sick, maintain physical distance and look out for each other in the days and weeks ahead.

“Today is the beginning of our next phase of protecting each other, and we will continue to need each other more than ever in the days ahead.”
