Mavericks won’t be playing until at least late June

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Mavericks fans won’t be able to root, root, root for the home team for about another two months at least.

The Western Canadian Baseball League has announced the start of the season will be delayed until, at minimum, late June or early July.

“Although the circumstances are not moving quickly enough at present in our favour, we want to look at all options in order to play this year,” said WCBL president Kevin Kvame after a board of governors call on Wednesday.

The league is holding out hope that a partial season can be played if “health and government positions on the pandemic change enough to make it feasible.”

Those same positions will inform the league’s decision on possibly only playing games at certain ballparks.

“The health and safety of our players, coaches, officials, and fans are paramount in all of our decision making and we will not be doing anything that is not in accordance with the public health authorities and governments of the respective provinces,” the release reads.
