#museumfromhome a worldwide movement

Enjoy historic sites, museums from your couch

Provincial historic sites and museums in Alberta have joined the #museumfromhome movement.

The movement began to trend online after museums around the world closed to help flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Curators from world-famous sites such as the Louvre in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art have been uploading virtual tours, interesting facts and never-before-seen parts of their collections.

Alberta content available now includes a sneak peek of the collection at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Drumheller and a video from Cardston’s Remington Carriage Museum’s about Alberta’s connection to Canada Dry and the prohibition era.

Jessica Knodel, marketing and communications coordinator at Medalta, said discussions happened in mid-March about getting more content online but staff reductions put that on hold. The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has allowed Medalta to hire back staff and they are again working to get more interactive and engaging content online, said Knodel, and that much of the collection can be viewed at medalta.passperfectonline.com.

An Esplanade spokesperson says they are continuing with local virtual programming through Come Together Virtual and will likely include the hashtag in the museum-related posts from now on.

New content from the province’s historic sites and museums will be uploaded each week.
