An interesting school year for first-year teachers

MEDICINE HAT, AB -It’s been quite an interesting school year for first-year teachers in 2020.

Kennedy Werre is in her first year of teaching at St. Francis Xavier School in Medicine Hat.

She teaches a grade 4/5 split and the school’s sports academy program.

And says it’s been quite the transition to have classes online.

It was over a month since teachers saw their students in person.

Followed by school being cancelled until further notice.

“Basically we found out on Sunday (March 15) and then we came to work Monday and just completely had to 360 our curriculum. And being a first-year teacher it was difficult obviously because I’m still learning everything as well. But also I give credit just coming out of university and they prepared us really well actually with the technology basis and stuff.”

Werre has been nominated for the Edwin Parr Award by the Medicine Hat Catholic School Division.

Each year, the Alberta School Boards Association honours six outstanding first-year teachers.

Werre grew up in Medicine Hat and says she was inspired by one of her teachers in grade 5 to become a teacher.

Her teacher back then Rob Grisonich was also her first basketball coach and became her last basketball coach at Medicine Hat College for the Rattlers during her time in post-secondary.

Werre says she likes to see student growth in the younger grades and her goal as a first-year teacher is to establish classroom management and build relationships with her students while finding their passions.

As for advice for first-year teachers, she encourages those starting out to ask for help.

“Know to never be afraid to ask for help because there are so many amazing teachers and people in the districts all over Alberta and Canada that are there to help you. So just really reaching out to those people and asking for help when you need it because it is tough your first few years.”

According to Werre, her first year teaching will be one she won’t forget.
