Starting early

Yard-waste pickup to begin next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Yard-waste pickup in Medicine Hat will begin on April 6, one week earlier than originally planned.

City of Medicine Hat officials made the decision based on comments from residents, many of whom started yard work early as a result of more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve received feedback from residents that have already filled up their green bins while staying at home,” said Lora Brenan, General Manager of Environmental Utilities. “Starting the program a week early is a small way we can help the community at this time.”

The early start is also expected to reduce traffic at the landfill, where physical distancing guidelines are in place.

“We’re urging the community to consider how essential their trip to the landfill is during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Brenan. “We want to keep our staff healthy to support the overall safety of the community and ensure there are no disruptions in service.”

More information on solid waste collection and schedules, can be found on the city’s website, or by downloading the free Recycle Coach app.

The City of Medicine Hat is limiting public access to all city facilities to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. For a complete list of closures, city-relief options, and how to do City business during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit www.medicinehat.ca.
