Feds make 14-day quarantine for returning travellers mandatory

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has again re-iterated that some Canadians are not taking COVID-19 seriously and now says the 14-day isolation for returning travellers is mandatory.

Under the Quarantine Act, fines and possibly jail time could be levied to those who don’t follow the law.

“Some people have not been taking this seriously – they’re getting together with friends after being away. This conduct isn’t just disappointing. It’s dangerous,” the PM said “What we’re asking for is not difficult. Stay home. Call your friends. If you’re coming back from abroad under no circumstances can you leave your home.”

Trudeau spoke with fellow G20 leaders on Thursday where issues such as the need for a coordinated global response, the need to flatten the global curve and protect supply chains.

“This is a global crisis that demands a global response,” he said.

Trudeau touted yesterday’s announcement of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit. The benefit will provide $2,000 per month for the next four months for workers who lose their income as a result of COVID-19.

Trudeau says banks and credit-card companies are being asked to lower interest rates on Canadians struggling financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the government is also looking at extending lower-interest credit directly to consumers.

Trudeau warned of a text scam that has been making the rounds and reminded Canadians the best way to find reliable information is through canada.ca.

He also announced Kirsten Hillman has been appointed Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S.
