OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a range of emergency measures this morning to support Canadians while announcing restrictions on cross-border travel to and from the United States.

Trudeau announced $27 billion in direct financial aid to employers and employees as well another $55 billion in tax deferral to provide liquity to Canadians.

There will also be a emergency care benefit that will be made available to those who don’t qualify for employment insurance benefits. This will allow access to employment benefits for those who are ill, are in quarantine, self-isolation or caring for family but don’t qualify for EI.

An emergency support benefit will also be made available to those who lose their job or are required to close their self-employment operation and don’t usually qualify for EI.

Both benefit plans will be available at this point for 14 weeks and provide financial support in line with that provided by EI.

Travel restricts between the US-Canada border affects all “non-essential” movement between the boundary but doesn’t apply to trucking.

Details on the financial aid can be found here.
