MEDICNE HAT, AB – Staff from a Medicine Hat-based charity who were detained in Ethiopia have been released, according to a media notice on the groups website.

“We are thrilled beyond words to see them reunited with their loved ones,” read the notice.

A total of 13 Canadian staff and volunteers as well as three Ethiopian staff were detained by the country’s government on Feb. 29 following allegations the group was dispensing expired medication and practising medicine without permission.

Canadian Humanitarian stated the group had permits to provide medical support but couldn’t comment on the specifics of the expiry of the medication aside to say the care offered was safe.
