Man arrested under Mental Health Act after vehicle crashes into building

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat police arrested a 27-year-old man under the Mental Health Act after a vehicle crashed into a building Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release from police, officers took a call from a man who sounded distressed and was allegedly threatening to harm himself at approximately 12:30 p.m. A short time after the call, a vehicle was found at the corner of Maple Avenue and Prince Street, that police say was related to the caller.

The man in the vehicle told officers to get back as they approached. Moments after officers moved away from the vehicle, the man allegedly drove it into the exterior wall of a business in the 500 block of Maple Avenue.

The man was transported to hospital under the Mental Health Act and to be treated for injuries resulting from the collision.

Nobody was injured inside the business.

Total damage to the vehicle and building is estimated at $50,000.
