Man in custody under Mental Health Act following standoff

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat police arrested a man under the Mental Health Act following a brief standoff in Ross Glen Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to a home on Ross Haven Avenue, where a man was in distress. According to Sgt. Stacey Kesler, the man was previously known to police and was believed to have a weapon.

Parts of the street were blocked off. The police service’s tactical team, along with members of the K9 Unit, were also called to contain the scene.

The man surrendered after 5 p.m. to police without incident. He was taken to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for assessment.
