City snow & ice control open house and survey underway

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Residents had their say on snow and ice in the city during an open house at Municipal Works on Tuesday.

It’s part of the city’s review that’s underway. They are seeking feedback on their snow and ice control practices.

The open house also provided education on current practices, levels of service, treatments, used and challenges faced during the winter.

When asked about city snow removal service, one resident told Chat News, “It’s pretty good on main streets where it’s really required, seems to be it needs to be more on the side streets because they get pretty bad sometimes.”

As for parking lots in the city, another resident said businesses have been keeping up. “They’re pretty good, the ones I’ve been at anyway. I mean they got a big pile of snow in them usually. There are fewer spots but then that happens every winter. So I think things are going along pretty good.”

Municipal Engineer Michael Knight says the city has been looking at changes in materials and technology that are out there and they’ve been engaging with other communities in the province as well.

“We want to pull some feedback from the public to see what’s working for them and what some of the challenges are,” Knight said.

He says they will also delve into any issues noted by residents.

Storyboards were at the open house to present the current program and provide education about what they are currently doing.

The last time the city reviewed its snow and ice control practices was in 2011.

“See if anything has changed in the world of snow and ice control since 2011. Different materials, different technology, different equipment, changes in weather, anything like that warrants us updating and making our current program as effective as it can be,” Knight said.

The online survey can be viewed by visiting this link.

The open house runs from 4:30-7:30 pm Tuesday, February 25 at the Municipal Works office.
