Routine training for Medicine Hat Fire Department’s Technical Rescue team

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When it comes to high-risk situations, the Medicine Hat Fire Department may use skills involving rope rescue in the city or region.

Due to the risk involved, special training tools and techniques during a rescue minimize the risk to rescuers and increase the chance of victim survival.

The department’s Technical Rescue team was practicing their skills with routine training today at Fire Station #2.

Tech Rescue Team Lead and Qualified Officer Josh Hauck says the specialty team trains once a month with 2 different shifts when they’re off duty.

He says the training is rope involved or during a confined space call where they may use cables.

“Anything from a low or steep angle, a high angle. Anything with a high rise operation or in the industry where we have confined space where there’s only one entry and exit then we can maybe manipulate a person and get them out of that vault or vessel.”

He says 16 current members are trained for the standard under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
