MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat police have one man in custody following what they’re calling a high-risk incident near the Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre Friday morning

According to a news release from police, officers received a report of a man in distress at approximately 10:45 a.m. Friday morning. Police say the man was allegedly armed with a weapon and possibly a danger to himself and others.

Police received reports the man may be in the area of Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre and Notre Dame Academy. Both schools were put into a brief hold and secure as a safety precaution.

The hold and secure, which last a half hour, meant access to both schools were limited, while classes continued inside.

RCMP later arrested the man without incident or injury near Dunmore.

“They did find a weapon on him, they’re still determining if there were any illegal acts were committed by that male,” said Inspector Brent Secondiak with the Medicine Hat Police Service. “He was definitely in distress and taken to hospital for his own well-being. We’re still determining if there will be any criminal charges or not.”

The man remains in custody and cannot be named unless charges are sworn against him.
