UPDATED: Officials confirm RCMP officer-involved shooting in Blairmore Tuesday

CROWSNEST PASS, AB – UPDATE: RCMP have confirmed that one person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Blairmore.

According to an RCMP release, at around 5:00 p.m. on February 11, two Blairmore RCMP members responding to a call for service attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the parking lot of the local Home Hardware store.

A confrontation ensured, which resulted in a service pistol being discharged. The vehicle involved travelled a short distance and then entered a ditch, according to the release.

The male driver was found and later pronounced deceased. The two Mounties were not injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been tasked to investigate and the Director of Law Enforcement has been notified. The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the confrontation with officials.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called into Blairmore to investigate a shooting.

Alberta RCMP initially reported at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 11 that there was a police presence along 20 Avenue between Integra Tire and Auto Centre and the Tim Horton’s in Blairmore.

ASIRT later confirmed that the incident was an officer-related shooting.

At this time, there are no further details from officials on the nature of the incident.

The public is asked to avoid the area for the time being. ASIRT is investigating this matter.
