Results of annual provincial report are in for MHPSD

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Annual Education Results Report (AERR) is in for the Medicine Hat Public School Division (MHPSD).

The 2018-2019 school year report was presented to the board on Tuesday, January 28 and is compared to provincial averages in the current year and three-year average.

They have seen a dramatic improvement in attendance data for their high school students.

And significant improvement for students in junior high on achievement exams.

MHPSD also ranked high in “safe and caring”, “program of studies”, and “education quality” categories.

However, the measure of improvement for school drop-out rates declined significantly according to the report and is ranked in the intermediate evaluation.

MHPSD Superintendent Mark Davidson says the drop-out rate seems to be a bit of a regional issue this year.

But it’s an ongoing process to address and improve those numbers according to Davidson.

“Some things they’re doing to try and address it is engaging in conversations with students as they go to find out why. They’re also working pretty heavily in my blueprint in graduating planning with students earlier to try and get students to have a target before they really get going in high school so they can see what the prize might be beyond the diploma.”

Davidson adds, sometimes some variables are unknown to the division that can impact the drop-out rate, which includes students moving out of province, as that data is not tracked into the division’s drop-out rate.

“Conversations with our principals, there are several things that they’re focused on to try and improve it. It can be a bit of a tough nut to crack to figure out why one year might be a bit different than another one. Your approach is similar, the staff is the same, their approach to kids hasn’t shifted dramatically so they’re examining it.”

Davidson is proud of the progress the division has made over the last couple of years in terms of achievement.

The Catholic Board of Education and The Prairie Rose School Division results came out late last year.
