New indoor skatepark getting set to open

Jan 27, 2020 | 8:40 AM

Medicine Hat, AB – Skaters looking to hone their skills over the winter months have been something of a nomadic bunch over the past decade.

A collapsed roof in 2010 caused the Central Neighbourhood Hub to cease its operations while last year saw The Summit indoor skatepark close its doors.

But now the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association has a new indoor home in the Light Industrial Area.

And they are hoping to open their doors next month to the city’s skateboarders.

“I grew up skating at Central and a lot of the guys helping out today grew up at Central Neighbourhood Hub,” said Jordan Mogck, who is heading up the construction for MHSA.

He added the facility helped build the local skateboarding community to what it is today.

Something he hopes the new facility can achieve.

“We’re guaranteed two years here right now. If it goes well, we’re actually going to expand,” said Mogck.

He also said the facility was made possible thanks to material donations from the local Tim Hortons franchises as well as Eagles Nest Ranch.

A final completion date hasn’t been set but Mogck expects it to be running in time for a scheduled SkateSkool on Feb. 9.

“Even if you don’t skateboard, it should be a safe place for all kids to come and hang out,” he said. “Everybody’s welcome.”
