Eagle Butte teacher in running for North American award

Jan 26, 2020 | 7:00 AM

A local teacher is one of two Canadians up for an award out of 30 finalists from North America.

Shyloh-Dawn Bonogofski is an Inclusion Learning Teacher and psychology teacher at Eagle Butte High School in Dunmore.

She works with students with mild to moderate learning needs—whether that’s mental health capacity building or learning disabilities.

Her psychology class is also popular. Bonogofski had the idea of running the class as a high school course. In the first year, 16 students were in the class. This year the class has grown to three sections and each section has 30 students.

Bonogofski was nominated her colleague Cammie Kannekens for the 2020 Peary Award through Pear Deck in the “Cultivating Compassion” category.

There are a total of six awards with five finalists in each category.

Bonogofski says she follows a piece of advice she was given at the start of her career.

“Everyday you should try and think about what your goal is and what you want students to remember about you. And for me it’s always been treating others with kindness, respect, we have no idea what other people are going through and so being able to show some compassion to others. So it’s really exciting that I’m able to be recognized for that and to even be nominated is great.”

Voting for the Pear Deck award took place last week.

The winners will be unveiled in the coming days.
