Town hall meetings on centralizing police in southwest Saskatchewan

MAPLE CREEK, SK – RCMP are considering centralizing police in southwest Saskatchewan.

Town hall meetings took place in Shaunavon and Leader this week.

Maple Creek’s meeting is tonight to collect feedback.

Meyers Norris Penny has been hired to do this study to review the deployment model in the region.

They say officer presence will still be in communities and they are not closing existing detachments in the Cypress region.

Maple Creek Sgt. Detachment Commander John Phipps understands they will hear several options at the meeting for consideration.

“A super-hub is where you take smaller detachments surrounding a larger community and you police it based out of that central larger community. In this case, Swift Current, where members would be deployed from there to cover the smaller areas.”

He says they’re looking at operating a different schedule than what currently exists, but says they don’t know what will be proposed.

“They’re looking to present the community a model different than what is currently in operation and something that’s going to be more efficient,” according to Sgt. Phipps.

There are no timelines for the said proposal.

The Town Hall meeting is tonight at 7 at the Maple Creek Armoury.
