Monarchist weighs in on Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from royal duties

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local watcher of the Royal Family says the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step back from royal duties is the right one.

Last week, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan announced their intentions to step back as senior members of the Royal Family. The couple “intend to become financially independent,” while continuing to support the Queen, according to their statement.

On Monday, Queen Elizabeth II agreed to let Harry and Meghan move to Canada on a part-time basis.

Bill Cocks, a local member of the Monarchist League of Canada, says he can’t speak for every one, but other monarchists he has spoken with supported the decision.

“Speaking for myself, I’m very supportive of it,” he said. “I think the more we can do to keep the monarchy a relevant institution in our changing times, the better, and I think allowing Prince Harry, who is quite a ways down from becoming King, I think to allow him the chance and his wife and family to live a more independent life is a good thing.”

Cocks says he was not surprised when he heard Harry and Meghan’s plans last week,

He adds it’s important for people to remember that, in addition to being members of the Royal Family, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also human.

“They’re not just some mythical, fantastic thing out there, they’re real people with real lives, thoughts and feelings,” he said.

Cocks went on to add, “I don’t see any reason why this couple should not be afforded the opportunity to step back from royal duties and pursue a somewhat more regular life. I don’t think it will compare to yours and mine, but I think it will afford them the opportunity to remain true to themselves, and true to their family and the future.”

Cocks noted as a monarchist, he also likes the idea of having a member of the Royal Family living in Canada.
