Two-goal nights for Kemp, Sillinger lead Tigers to victory in Moose Jaw

MOOSE JAW, SK – Posting 30 shots in one game is something many teams around the WHL struggle to do on a nightly basis, but the Medicine Hat Tigers aren’t like most.

On Saturday night in Moose Jaw, the Tigers were relentless on Warriors goaltender Brock Gould with 30 shots over just the first 20 minutes in a 7-5 victory on the road.

Brett Kemp and Cole Sillinger each had a pair of goals in Medicine Hat’s third consecutive victory, while defenceman Damon Agyeman netted the first WHL goal of his career.

Coming off a 5-3 comeback victory at the Canalta Centre on Friday night, the Tigers gave up an early Moose Jaw goal for the second straight night with Cade Hayes scoring his first of the season 56 seconds in.

Lukas Svejkovsky was able to tie the game at 1-1 four minutes later, setting the stage for Agyeman to score his first goal with the Tigers at the side of the Warriors net with 5:49 remaining in the frame.

Late period power play goals by Ryan Chyzowski and Sillinger gave Willie Desjardins’ club some breathing room at the first intermission, leading in shots 30-9 at that point.

Hayes once again opened a period with a goal for the Warriors to cut the gap to 4-2 just over four minutes into the second, a score which held for most of the frame.

That was until Kemp found the back of the net shorthanded 10 minutes later to extend Medicine Hat’s lead to three.

Moose Jaw’s Ryder Korczak responded on that same man advantage to make it a 5-3 game, but any momentum from the Warriors was silenced with Kemp’s second of the period just five seconds before the buzzer.

Four minutes into the third it was Sillinger scoring unassisted for his second of the evening to put the visitors ahead 7-3, however Moose Jaw’s hopes didn’t die there.

Logan Doust and Garrett Wright both beat Tigers goaltender Mads Søgaard over the final 10 minutes of regulation to make it interesting, but Medicine Hat was able to hang on for the weekend sweep.

Chyzowski led all skaters with a four-point evening, while Kemp and Dylan Plouffe both had three-point outings in the victory.

Søgaard didn’t have his best stuff with five goals allowed on 30 shots, however he was still able to earn the victory to improve his record on the season to 14-8-1-1.

As for Gould, he was pulled for Boston Bilous in the third period after allowing the Sillinger unassisted marker to finish his night with seven goals allowed on 43 Tigers shots.

Moving to a record of 28-12-1-1, the Tigers have now won five of their last six contests and trail the Edmonton Oil Kings for first place in the Central Division by eight points.

Medicine Hat will enjoy a full week off between games with their next coming on January 18 at home against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7:30 pm.

Tigers players will regroup this week for their annual A&W Skills Competition on Thursday at 7:00 pm in support of the MS Society of Canada, doors will open at 6:00 pm.
