The man accused in a fatal shooting outside the Walmart store in south Red Deer last month made a brief court appearance Monday morning.

Chase Freed appeared in Red Deer provincial court via CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre where he remains in custody.

The 18-year-old faces six charges including second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder with a firearm, fail to stop while being pursued by a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle.

Freed is in the process of applying for legal aid and has yet to secure a lawyer. His next scheduled court appearance is Feb. 18.

C.J. “Jim” Williams of Red Deer, who was 69, was shot and killed outside the south Walmart on the night of December 20. Police believe two other people were also shot at during the incident.

RCMP say two suspects fled the scene before being arrested about four hours later near Rimbey following an intense police search.

Crystal Maurice, who faces four counts including accessory after the fact to murder, is due to appear in court this Wednesday.

A memorial service for Williams was held on Saturday.
