MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has awarded the contract for curbside recycling to Green For Life (GFL) Environmental Inc.

The company was one of three who submitted proposals to operate a material recovery facility (MRF) and residential recycling collection.

The contract is valued annually at $1.86 million and was approved unanimously by council.

According to the city, it was the best evaluated bid and Mayor Ted Clugston assures GFL was extremely competitive.

“The city had some trouble with our previous contractor and my biggest worry was continuity of service because we have had quite a bit of momentum here in Medicine Hat. The citizens have really gotten on board. I can remember when this council 2010 or 2011 voted against even implementing curbside (recycling). So to look at how far we’ve come now to have implemented it, wanted it, and saying please don’t take it away is an amazing change in the last 5 or 6 years.”

Recyclables will be gathered in Medicine Hat and processed in Edmonton.

Redi and the former contractor E-360 Solutions also submitted proposals.

The contract with Green For Life is for ten years.

According to Clugston, “There needs to be some certainty, there’s a lot of investment in recycling with the trucks and handling facilities. Those kinds of things, so there’s a big upfront capital investment. So yes, it’s a long contract.”
