Team Funk comes up just short at provincial curling qualifier

Jan 5, 2020 | 7:59 PM

CALGARY, AB – Medicine Hat’s Trevor Funk rink will not be playing for an Alberta men’s curling championship, falling at a provincial qualifier on Sunday afternoon.

Funk’s rink dropped a 7-5 decision to the Rhett Friesz rink out of Airdrie in the ‘C’ bracket semi-finals to see their provincial hopes come to an end.

Holding a 5-3 lead over Team Freisz after the eighth end, Team Funk allowed a three-spot in the ninth end before coming up short in the tenth with a stolen point going the way of the Airdrie foursome.

The local team of Funk, Jordan Kindrat, Bryden Smith, and John Owsjanikow finished their weekend with a 2-3 record with wins coming on Saturday and Sunday at the Inglewood Curling Club.

Airdrie’s Aaron Sluchinski rink, Calgary’s Robert Johnson rink, Strathmore’s Kevin Park rink, and Team Freisz all clinched spots for the 2020 Boston Pizza Cup Men’s Provincial Championships which will be held in Westlock in February.

The winner of that bonspiel will represent Alberta at the 2020 Tim Horton’s Brier in Kingston, Ontario.
