Family Leisure Centre hosting activities on New Year’s Eve

“Family Day is our busiest day, New Year’s Eve is a close second,” she said. “We usually get between 1,200 and 1,500 people for New Year’s Eve.”

The event will feature several activities, including floor hockey and spontaneous sports in the gymnasium, Nerf wars in the fieldhouse and activities for children and toddlers. There will also be quiet activities and a movie in the Sage Room.

Families are also able to swim at two different times. Pool times will be open from noon- 2 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m.

The Cenovus Arena will also play host to public skating during the afternoon, with skating times between noon-1:30 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. This year, Petryshyn says they’ve added a new program, Play Skate, for the public skating time.

“It’s for families with younger ones, just a special place that is cordoned off so they can feel a little bit more safe without people zooming around them,” she said.

Petryshyn adds she enjoys seeing families make happy memories at the event.

“Family is in the name, Family Leisure Centre, so doing everything together as a family as we ring in a brand new year, and look forward to what’s coming, I think that’s really important we can do it together,” she said.

The event will conclude with a New Year’s countdown and balloon drop at 3:45 p.m, to allow kids to ring in the start of 2020 early.

The Family Leisure Centre will be open for business on New Year’s Day, but on reduced hours of noon to 5 p.m.
