OTTAWA, ON. — Premier Jason Kenney says there cannot be a strong Canada without a strong Alberta, and it is time for the federal government to act.

The premier spoke to the Canadian Club of Ottawa Monday morning, part of his trip to Ottawa to advocate for a fair deal for the province.

During his speech, Kenney says he plans to ask for multiple requests from the federal government, including $2.4 billion in fiscal stabilization, which he says is owed to the province following the economic downturn which began in 2014.

During his speech, Kenney said initiatives from multiple levels of government has impacted Alberta’s energy industry, citing the passing of Bills C-48 and C-69. He notes other oil and gas producing jurisdictions in the United States, such as Texas and Oklahoma, have not seen economic downturns.

“Albertans submit that the difference is not price, but it is policy,” he said.“Policies that have made our industry less and less competitive, driving job creating investment out of this country. and policies that have killed and delayed pipelines, mean we are being held captive to the US, and sell one of our country’s most valuable assets to them at fire-sale prices, subsidizing massive profits for U.S. refineries. its like taking our family jewels to the pawn shop.”

Kenney is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday.
