Positive reaction in Red Deer to province’s rural crime reduction plan
Red Deer, AB – Local elected officials are weighing in on the provincial government to add 500 RCMP positions for rural communities across Alberta.
“We know that crime knows no borders,” says Red Deer mayor Tara Veer. “Helping with rural crime, we think, ultimately will help with crime in our city, but also in terms of the message that it sends to any criminals seeking to set up shop in Alberta. We think it will result in a substantial culture shift.”
A new police funding model will see small and rural communities begin paying for a portion of the frontline policing services they receive starting next year.
Veer says that has been an issue of long-standing concern for The City of Red Deer.
