Cypress Hills a winter wonderland as the holidays approach

Dec 2, 2019 | 5:29 PM

Elkwater, AB – Hidden Valley Ski Resort is gearing up for the season and, weather permitting, is scheduled to open on Dec. 14. But alpine skiing or snowboarding is far from the only thing to do in the Cypress Hills over the holidays.

The popular skating trail is being prepared with the snowshoeing available now.

But there is plenty of other activities as well to take part in according to the Cypress Hills Provincial Park head of visitor services.

“We also have our cross-country trails,” said Mike Ractliffe. “We have enough snow now that we are starting to groom those and track set them. And, again, you can get rental equipment from the Visitor Centre in Elkwater.”

Ractliffe said this year will also see the return of the natural luge track.

“That’s essentially a big snow slide with a couple of bends and turns in it and that is really good fun and free to use,” he said.

The toboggan hill is already being used with sleds available to use as well.

For overnight stays, Elkwater Lodge assistant manager Leslie Nemeth says they have a number of units available but they expect them to go quickly.

“We have guests that come to spend the season together, their family members will meet here and spend a few days,” said Nemeth, adding that while many of the units have kitchenettes, Buglers Restaurant will be offering Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners.

“And we encourage our guests to join in the family and community New Year’s Eve party at the community hall,” said Nemeth.

More adventurous types won’t be at a loss for accommodation at the park over the winter with back-country, front-country huts to rent as well as some townsite and hike-in campsites also available.
