WALSH, AB — Cypress County Fire Services believe a mechanical issue is to blame for a semi truck fire near Walsh Monday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 3:30 p.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief John McBain. The fire occurred in the westbound lands of the Trans-Canada Highway outside of Walsh.

The fire began in the rear wheels of the truck, which was hauling a mixture of goods at the time. The driver was not injured, says McBain.

The west lanes were closed for several hours while firefighters extinguished the blaze. The highway reopened at approximately 7:30 p.m.
