Daylight saving time

Province seeking feedback on daylight saving time

Nov 19, 2019 | 3:54 PM

EDMONTON, AB — The Alberta government is taking another look at daylight saving time.

The province is asking for public feedback about whether Alberta should continue observing daylight saving time.

“We know people have strong opinions about changing their clocks twice a year, and we want to hear them,” said Nate Glubish, Service Alberta Minister, in a statement. “As more Canadian provinces and territories and some American states are having discussions about this, it’s important that we hear from Albertans.”

Currently, the province observes daylight saving time from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November, which sees clocks moved ahead one hour.

Legislation was tabled in British Columbia in October to move to summer hours all year in the province. In the United States, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington have also passed legislation to move to summer hours permanently, but federal approval is required to enact the change.

The European Union is also ending the seasonal time change in 2021.

In Alberta, a NDP private member’s bill to scrap daylight saving time was defeated in 2017.

The online survey will be open until December 10. It can be accessed here.
