Strathcona Centre won’t reopen until January

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city says it will be a little longer before members are able to once again access the Strathcona Centre.

According to a release from the city, the reopening of the centre will be extended into January 2020 in order to ensure successful completion of the project before it opens to the public.

The goal is to have programming options at the Strathcona Centre available on January 2, 2020. The centre was originally set to open December 2.

The city says a delay in the arrival of mechanical equipment, specifically for the new air system, is responsible for the delay.

City staff will return to the building the week of December 16 to ensure the renovations are properly completed and allow staff to get reacquainted with the building.

The renovations have been underway since July, with HVAC equipment and fire alarms that had reached the end of their life cycle being replaced. The building also has new siding, a new roof and barrier-free access to help accommodate people with mobility aids.

Those who have fitness centre memberships at the Strathcona Centre will continue to have their memberships accepted at Crestwood Recreation Centre while the Strathcona Centre remains closed.
